How to refresh your home & garden for Spring

Spring into action with a home and garden refresh

The season of new growth, fresh shoots and longer days means one thing - spring is on the way. The transition from winter to summer always feels like the perfect time to refresh and revive, indoors and out.

Start by introducing spring blooms to add lightness indoors. Faux flowers and botanicals are perfect because they last and continue to look as fresh as the day you got them. Our beautiful botanicals are so realistic, it is extremely difficult to know they haven’t been freshly cut.

New seasonal faux florals include a glorious magnolia branch in pink, which stands out beautifully when teamed with a dark vase. Slightly paler and just as lovely, our Faux Ranunculus Stem in blush pink looks particularly striking on its own. With a soft, gentle look and feel, the Wild Lace Flower has a whimsical note, while our Faux Pink Blossom Branch feels like a breath of fresh air.

Seasonal style

All the above are seasonal stems which look wonderful as a bunch or as standalone statement blooms. For a bigger, bolder display, any of these are perfect paired with pussy willow and foraged twigs, Faux Catkin, and fresh or Faux Eucalyptus. A great advantage of faux stems is that they work on their own or can be added to hand-picked, foraged finds, or shop-bought blooms to bulk out arrangements.

Our Faux Cyclamen and Orchids are wonderful for spaces that need brightening up, but don’t have the right conditions for real plants. Think how easy it is to brighten dull hallways and tucked-away corners or shelves with the addition of a pretty cyclamen… or three. If you have enough display space, remember the interior stylist’s ‘guideline of threes’, which says that items arranged in odd numbers are more eye-catching, and generally more effective, than those grouped in even numbers.

Our Miniature Metal Urn with a pretty, fluted top looks wonderful teamed with spring bulbs. Glass Candlestick Vases (which do double duty as a plant or dinner candle holder) and tablescape sculpture, such as our Valencia and Samai, all add texture and interest when teamed with flowers, coloured candles and foliage. Our Amethyst and Dusky Pink dining candles work particularly well at this time of year, while our small Macon Pillar Candles in Dusky Pink and Raspberry look stunning teamed with our Pressed Floral Glass Hurricane.

Lighten up

Let in as much light as possible. Mirrors help bounce any available light around - place one strategically to maximise light. Hanging a mirror opposite a window will capture and reflect the most light and we currently have some fabulous new vintage-style Bevelled Edge Mirrors. Frameless and available in three shapes, shaped mirrors look fantastic and reflect light beautifully.

Revive the senses with scents such as Greenhouse and Garden Rose, which are both new to our scented Walled Garden Tinned Candles range. For constant fragrance, our Room Diffuser by True Grace in Seashore has a wonderfully revitalising effect.

Helping hand outside

Outdoors, terracotta planters have year-round appeal, and always add a sense of warmth when introduced in springtime. We have everything from extremely affordable Vintage Style Herb Pots and Pie Crust Plant Pots, to investment buys such as large Vintage Terracotta Urns to elevate spring gardens to another level.

Team rustic pots with wire holders or shelves - the contrast of wirework and terracotta creates contrast for added interest. Our vintage-style wirework French shelves are perfect for small spaces and can be used indoors or out, mounted on a wall or on a sill.

Wirework is a great way to liven up gardens, particularly before spring bulbs come through. We have a quirky new range of wirework sculptures, including a pig, chicken and duck. Made in Zimbabwe with a rustic weathered finish, these handcrafted characters add charm to any outdoor space.

We also have some incredible Staddle Stones. Originally used as a supporting base in granaries and larders to keep perishable goods safe from vermin and damp, staddle stones now add bold decoration. These are lovely pieces that will age and bed further into your garden over time.

Mother’s Day gifting

We realise it can be a bittersweet day for many, but if you are lucky enough to have a Mum or mother-figure in your life, March 10th this year is the day you can make her feel extra special.

We’ve put together a separate section on our website, dedicated to useful gift suggestions at a variety of price points. From our gorgeous Melun Plant Pots, decorated with a pretty blue and white botanical design, which are perfect for a favourite houseplant, to gift sets of French Soaps, lovely candlesticks, sculpture and accessories for indoors and out, we’ve got you covered.

We also have a gorgeous range of botanical greetings cards by award-winning illustrator Laura Stoddart, which look as wonderful in a frame as they are lovely to receive. And if you get caught out by the arrival of Mother’s Day this year, our gift voucher will salvage any situation!

Please don’t hesitate to ask for advice on putting faux blooms together, either by email or in person if you are able to visit our Melrose shop. We have lots of inspiration to share.
